From surfing to sailing, canoing and kayacking to mountain biking, the summer months are packed with opportunities for getting out into the great outdoors and taking part in some adrenaline-pumping adventure activities. For many adventure sports enthusiasts, summer is synonymous with one sport in particular: surfing. And with some of the world`s best surf spots to be found on the other side of the equator, it`s always perfect surf weather somewhere!

If you`re thinking about pulling on your shorts, grabbing your board and hitting the waves, here are a few tips on where to find the world`s best surf spots.

In first place, it has to be Australia`s Gold Coast. Australia is famous for its stunning beaches and fantastic breaks, and Gold Coast City is one of the countries top destinations for surfers in the know. In the subtropical southeast of Queensland, the beaches here stretch for 70 kilometres and offer perfect conditions for surfing.

In second place, the Mentawai Islands, a string of almost 70 islands off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, are famous for their terrific waves. The four biggest islands – North and South Pagi, Sipora and Siberut – deliver some of the most sublime surfing experiences anywhere on the planet.

Coming in third is Jeffrey`s Bay, South Africa. In the Eastern Cape, Jeffrey`s Bay is one of the best-loved surf spots in the world – head for baches such as Magna Tubes, Boneyards and Albatross and you`ll quickly realise why.

Fourth position goes to Fuertavenura, in the Canary Islands. Weather conditions are pretty much perfect for surfers all year round, and the endless beaches and crashing waves make this sunny spot a real paradise for surfers.

In fifth place, it`s Ilha de Santa Catarina, Brazil. In the south of the country, this island (often called Florianopolis after its capital). Head here during the Brazilian summer (December-March) and you`ll find unbeatable spots and beautiful people at spots such as Praia da Joaquinga and Praia Mole.

Sixth place goes to El Salvador, sandwiched between Guatemala and Honduras, where you can find swells of up to 10ft durinf the March to October high season.

In seventh, we`ve got Costa Rica, Central America, with its coastlines that face the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, and the Caribbean to the east. Waves are excellent year-round, and there`s a long swell season – from April to October.

Sunny California comes in eighth, with huge winter swells at mountainous spors such as Mavericks, and gentler waves at locations such as Half Moon Bay and Malibu.

Legendary Bali, Indonesia, is in ninth position, with year-round great waves and swells that can reach 12 ft between April and November.

Finally, and a little off the tourist mapl, the Independent State of Samoa, one of the Samoan Islands in the South Pacific, offers consistently excellent waves against a beautiful tropical background.

Of course, whereever you choose to get your surfing kicks, you`ll want to have the right gear both in and out of the water. From board shorts and rash-shirts to hoodies for evening coverups, it pays to dress for practicality and comfort as well as style when planning your summer surf wardrobe.
